What is a Workshop?
What happens in a wall raising workshop?
The purpose of a workshop is to teach willing and like-minded participants the methods and techniques of straw bale construction so that one day they may be able to make their own dream of creating a strawbale home, a reality!
The workshops are hands on, hard work and heaps of fun! This is a list of what we aim to achieve at each workshop –
- Trimming of the straw bales
- Staking of the straw bales
- Raising the walls
- Straightening the bales and plumbing
- Notching the straw bales
- Putting in the compression plate
- Compressing the straw bales
- Pre compression
- Stitching the walls
- Stuffing the gaps in the wall systems
- Trimming the whole wall to make bales naked ready for rendering
- Start rendering if time allows
Obviously success depends on lots of factors such as;
- size and design of project,
- number and skills of participants,
- weather conditions,
- good organisation,
- appropriate preparation for the event,
- all materials being readily available etc
What you can expect
You are guided through all aspects of the construction and each topic is discussed in depth with “on the spot” lectures and question and answer sessions. Your Strawtec team are there to answer all your questions and to help you fully understand both the theoretical and the practical considerations of strawbale construction. They are also there to help you all achieve a great deal of work in a relatively short amount of time, ensuring the highest quality of workmanship and that everyone leaves with a brimming sense of pride and accomplishment.
The days are packed with activity usually starting at 8am and finishing up around 5pm but this depends on the weather and the time of year. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace as you know your limits and those limits are respected. Our goal is to get as far as possible in the construction of the building and to give you as much information, guidance and support as we can.
Each workshop offers different opportunities and challenges and the timeframe and structure of the event will be set to suit the type of project. Please read each of our workshop announcements in full and email Sand our office manager directly at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions about the workshops.
