Lorien Novalis, School for Rudolf Steiner Education, Glenhaven via Hornsby, NSW
This loadbearing school cottage for the Lorien Novalis school at Glenhaven was designed and constructed with the help of the children, parents and teachers of the school. The building measures about 60 sqm.
Our involvement included assistance in the planning stage, facilitation of a wall raising & rendering working bee, completion of second coat of render and commencement of third final coat for the volunteers to gain experience to finish the job.
The working bee: Installation of roof trusses following the strawbale wall raising, the aim is to have the roof on and first coat of clay render applied at the end of the working bee in order to protect the bale walls from rain, fire, hungry creatures etc….
Clay, supplied by us, was used to render the walls. Following the schools (Steiner) philosophy emphasis was given to creativity, organic forms and natural materials. All buildings at the school have been designed and planned to blend in with the surrounding 5 acre bush environment.
“Looking through”. A creative design allowing a play between light, shapes & materials.
We hope to add some more pictures of the completed project soon. If you would like more information on the school please visit their website at http://www.lorien.com.au
